Newspaper Advertising A brief History
Various forms of advertising have existed for thousands of years. The Egyptians used papyrus to advertise products and services. In ancient Rome and other parts of the ancient world, traders used mosaics to advertise their items. The Athenians, however, took advertising to a whole new level, using town criers in the city to roam the streets advertising products and services (just like our TV and the radio commercials) and we can probably assume that they were the inventors of advertising. as we know it today
The first print Newspaper advertisement in English was published in 1477 by William Caxton, an English merchant, diplomat, writer and typographer. This announcement announces the release of Caxton's “Sarum Ordinal” or “Pye”, a list of rules for the Salisbury clergy on how to deal with the change in Easter date.
At the beginning of the 17th century, Newspaper advertising was very common and written by the same merchant. La Gazette, the first French newspaper created by Theophraste Renaudot in 1631, contains personal advertisements for those who seek and offer jobs, buy and sell goods and services, and advertisements of all kinds.
In the 18th century, illustrations began to appear in advertisements and advertising agents, as they were called, began to write and illustrate advertisements.
So begin the era of Newspaper Advertising.
