Those with the name Bernam enjoy challenges and rivalry, and they are realists and visionary planners. They are also highly domestic and love their home and family, frequently sacrificing their own personal needs for the benefit of others. They appear warm and unthreatening, and people are often drawn to them for their caring nature and generous spirits.
However, in many run-of-the-river irrigation schemes, water demand rarely matches river flow and reports of water shortages and rationing during the dry season are common. To address these challenges, it is important to assess the impacts of climate change on future hydrological flows in key river basins that support paddy cultivation. This study evaluates the performance of the SWAT model to simulate rainfall-runoff and streamflow in the Bernam River Basin in Malaysia using projections of climate changes from the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. Historical gridded hydro-meteorological data were used to set up the SWAT model for the study period, and sensitivity analysis was conducted to identify parameters with significant impact on the Bernam streamflow. A parallel processing option was implemented to accelerate the calibration process and reduce the overall model computation time. This allows a quicker and more precise model calibration for this large watershed.
